Travel in a sustainable way through Swedish Lapland, from the coast to mountains by train. Starting in the coastal city of Luleå with a Northern Lights and Dogsledding tour, before proceeding to the mountain village of Abisko and even up to the world famous Aurora Sky Station. The distance (approx. 440km) between Luleå and Abisko you will travel by train over one of Europe’s northernmost train routes. You will cross the Arctic Circle and travel through endless forests in one of the world’s most unique landscapes. To complete your holiday, this package includes a unique stay at the world’s first ICEHOTEL and a thrilling Northern Lights safari on Snowmobile.

The coastal city of Luleå

This iconic Swedish Lapland Holiday starts in Luleå, the largest city of Swedish Lapland. Located on the coast, 150km south of the Arctic Circle. Here you will stay 2 nights in a modern and centrally located hotel right next to the waterfront. From December, Luleå  is a frozen wonderland of snow and ice trails, where you can ski, skate, walk and sled across the bay directly from the city centre. Located close to the Arctic Circle, means that from September until March you can, under good conditions, spot the magical Northern Lights!

Abisko National Park

From the coastal city of Luleå, the journey proceeds by train into the alpine surrounding of the Abisko National Park. About 200km north of the Arctic Circle. Here you will stay 2 nights by the STF Tourist Station, located in the heart of Abisko National park. Being located within the Arctic and very frequently inside the Aurora Oval means that during the winter, Abisko often experiences fantastic Northern Lights. A 20-minute ride brings you up to a height of 900 meters above sea level to visit the Aurora Sky Station, one of the best places on earth for Northern Lights viewing.

ITINERARY

Northern Lights Holiday (6 days / 5 nights)

Arrival Day

Welcome to Swedish Lapland! On arrival to Kiruna Airport, you land 150km north from the Arctic Circle into the northernmost part of Sweden. A short transfer will bring you to the family owned hotel Camp Ripan, close to the heart of Kiruna city. Here you will stay in a comfortable private timber chalet. The hotel’s rewarded Aurora Spa invites you to wander between heat and cold. Relax indoors and enjoy the winter white landscape through panorama windows, or feel the cool caress of the polar winter across your cheek while enveloped by the comfort of the outdoor warm pool. If you are lucky, the colorful dance of the Northern Lights will entertain you!

 
Day 2 –  A Fun Day in Kiruna

After a good night sleep and enjoying a rich Scandinavian breakfast buffet, a private taxi transfer will take you to world’s first ICEHOTEL. You may visit the ICEHOTEL Art Exhibition where you can see the fantastic sculptures and the ice rooms in peace on your own. A non-alcoholic drink at the ICEBAR is included in your visit. Before heading back to the hotel, you may check the souvenir shop. If you are interested in learning more about the indigenous Sámi culture and their reindeers. We have selected several optional tours where you can choose from.

During the evening you go hunting for the magical Northern Lights by dog sled! By arriving at the Husky Kennel, you can relax and take place on warm reindeer skins on a sled and enjoy the dark polar night! The team of friendly huskies will pull you through the sparkling winter wonderland.  Immerse yourself in the dark wintry nights of Lapland and escape the city lights with the enthusiast huskies. Along the route a stop will be made to enjoy a warm outdoor dinner and a hot drink by the campfire. Meanwhile, the guide will provide you with more information about the Northern Lights. An experience which will give you memories for a lifetime!

 
Day 3 – Abisko and Aurora Sky Station

Today you will continue northward to the small mountain village of Abisko. Situated within a bowl of mountains, Abisko is well known as the “Blue Hole” (a patch of permanently clear sky) because of its little cloudy and snowy weather. In addition to its location on the Auroral Oval, Abisko becomes the best place in Europe for observing the magical natural phenomenon Northern Lights. A transfer will take you to the Kiruna train station, followed by a 1,5-hour scenic train ride towards Abisko. In the evening you will take the chairlift up to the Aurora Sky Station, 900 meters above sea level, which is listed in the Lonely Planet’s top 10 places of the world for Northern Lights viewing. After arriving, you have an opportunity to learn more about the Northern Lights by participating in a guided tour.  The last chairlift ride down leaves at 01:00.

Day 4 – Abisko National Park 

In the morning you may take it easy after having a late night in the Aurora Sky Station. If you plan to wake up early then there are many optional tours to choose from to explore the Abisko National Park in your preferred way. What about taking part in a scenic snowmobile tour driving high up in the mountain areas.  Ice fishing or snowshoe walking into the unspoiled winter wonderland? We can recommend visiting the Naturum visitor center for the Abisko National Park to learn more about the region.

After dinner, you may choose for a relaxed last evening in the hotel, or spend one more evening outdoors chasing the Northern Lights by joining an optional snowmobile Northern Lights safari.

Day 5 – Departure Day

After daily enjoying new experiences it’s time to travel home. Depending on your flight schedule, maybe you have some time left to relax in this Northernmost part of Swedish Lapland. If you have an early flight, then it is time to get ready and check out of your hotel room. A transfer will be arranged for you from Abisko to Kiruna Airport. You can look back on your amazing 5 days visit to Swedish Lapland!

Day 4 – Abisko National park

Waking up after a good night sleep, enjoy breakfast and fresh coffee, before getting ready for another day  in the Arctic. Today you can choose to spend the day on your own pace. There are different options to explore the beautiful Abisko National Park in your preferred way. You can explore the nearby surroundings on your own, rent ski’s or snowshoes which are supplied by your accommodation. Or choose from optional guided tours as snowmobiling, ice fishing or snowshoe walking. For the evening there are several optional tours available to chase the Northern Lights.

 

Day 6 – Departure Day

Today it’s time to travel homewards. Depending on your flight schedule, you maybe have some time left visit the nearby Sámi-open air museum. Here you can learn more about the genuine Sámi culture and meet and feed reindeer. If you want to have a closer encounter with reindeers, you can also join one of the Sámi culture and reindeer tours. If you have an early flight, then it is time to get ready and check out of your hotel room. A private transfer will be arranged for you to Kiruna Airport.

Day 1 – Arrival day

Arrival Luleå Airport based on your flight schedule and transfer to your hotel. In Luleå you will stay in the 4-star Clarion Sense Hotel, labelled with the best level environmental classification. After checking in, the rest of the day is free for you to explore Luleå. Relax, stroll the charming city, visit on of the many trendy café or explore landmarks. Being the biggest city in Swedish Lapland, Luleå has remarkable restaurants which are recommended in the White Guide. The Swedish guide system for Sweden’s top restaurant and cafes. Whether you are looking for local delicacies or an international taste sensation – Luleå has it all.

 

Day 2 – Dogsledding and Northern Lights

After a good night sleep and enjoying a rich Scandinavian breakfast buffet it’s time to get ready to be outdoors. Today you will experience the ultimate Dog Sledding adventure with your team of enthusiast and friendly Husky dogs. You will meet your guide at the hotel lobby and after a short transfer you arrive by the Husky kennel. The dogsled tours will go over frozen rivers and through snow covered forest, offering a great opportunity to see wildlife on the way. Together with your highly skilled guide and well-trained friendly Alaskan Husky dogs you will enjoy a high quality and unforgettable nature experience!

In the evening you will be picked up by your hotel and go on a hunt for the Northern Lights by car. During the tour you will learn about the different colours, get tips how to photograph them and learn about myths and mythology around this mysterious phenomenon from our ancient ancestors.

 

Day 3 – Crossing the Arctic Circle and night visit Aurora Sky Station

Today you will leave the coast behind you and travel further by train to the mountain village of Abisko. This unique sustainable journey across the Arctic landscape will bring you in a comfortable way far above the Arctic Circle. Upon arrival, it is about 5-min walking distance to your accommodation the STF Abisko Tourist Station. Situated in Abisko National Park, 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The resort is surrounded by Lapporten’s (The Lapponian Gate’s) characteristic U-shaped silhouette, the Abisko Mountain Range with Mount Nuolja and Torneträsk Lake. In the evening a unique night visit to the Aurora Sky Station is included.

 

Day 5 – The World’s First and Original ICEHOTEL

After 2 nights Abisko, today it’s time to travel further by train to Kiruna where you will spend your last night by the world-famous ICEHOTEL. Here you will stay in a comfortable warm hotel room. In the evening, you will join an exciting northern light snowmobile safari across the Arctic winter landscape. Along the way you will make a stop by a warm wilderness cabin where a delicious 2-course dinner is served.
