This week is a perfect combination of well planned winter activities and enough time to discover Swedish Lapland on your own. We included 3 guided tours, which will give you a taste of the different winter activities that are part of the local lifestyle. During this week you get to experience the thrill of dog sledding, snowmobiling and to enjoy the serenity of the wilderness on snowshoes. Beside the planned activities there will be enough time to enjoy Luleå on your own.

The entrance to the ice track where Olympic speedskater Kjeld Nuis set a new world record as fastest man on ice 93 km/h is on about 10 minutes car drive from your accommodation. The track is free accessible and is about 10 km long and except ice skating its very suitable for making a walk and absorb the winter scenery. It’s an awesome way to spend a few hours in the middle of Luleå town, where you can enjoy warm waffles and hot steaming coffee on the small island Gråsjälören.

Optional activities

Do you want to learn more about the Sámi culture and the history of the region? Except the three iconic winter activities already included in this travel package, there’s enough time left to tailor the holiday to your wishes. Meet a Sámi family in their winter camp, visit the UNESCO word heritage site ‘Gammelstad‘. Join a thrilling icebreaker tour on board of the Artic Explorer, be amazed by the thundering rapids of Storforsen or choose from many more activities we offer.

Northern Lights

In the evenings its possible to join a Northern lights tour you will be taken off the beaten track and chase together with an experienced guide one of the most mysterious and profound phenomena the world has to offer.

Beach front bungalows

You will stay in modern beachfront bungalows beside the Luleå River and on a short distance (9km) from the city centre. They are newly build and have a large patio, offering wide views over the snow covered landscape. The accommodation offers 2 bedrooms with comfortable beds, a large combined living room with a double sofa bed and a fully equipped kitchen with a large fridge, freezer, dishwasher and hob with oven. Bathroom with shower and toilet. The cabins are equipped with a wood fireplace and parking is available next to the bungalow.

ITINERARY

Swedish Lapland Winter Holiday | 8 days / 7 nights

Arrival Day

Welcome to Swedish Lapland! On arrival to Kiruna Airport, you land 150km north from the Arctic Circle into the northernmost part of Sweden. A short transfer will bring you to the family owned hotel Camp Ripan, close to the heart of Kiruna city. Here you will stay in a comfortable private timber chalet. The hotel’s rewarded Aurora Spa invites you to wander between heat and cold. Relax indoors and enjoy the winter white landscape through panorama windows, or feel the cool caress of the polar winter across your cheek while enveloped by the comfort of the outdoor warm pool. If you are lucky, the colorful dance of the Northern Lights will entertain you!

 
Day 2 –  A Fun Day in Kiruna

After a good night sleep and enjoying a rich Scandinavian breakfast buffet, a private taxi transfer will take you to world’s first ICEHOTEL. You may visit the ICEHOTEL Art Exhibition where you can see the fantastic sculptures and the ice rooms in peace on your own. A non-alcoholic drink at the ICEBAR is included in your visit. Before heading back to the hotel, you may check the souvenir shop. If you are interested in learning more about the indigenous Sámi culture and their reindeers. We have selected several optional tours where you can choose from.

During the evening you go hunting for the magical Northern Lights by dog sled! By arriving at the Husky Kennel, you can relax and take place on warm reindeer skins on a sled and enjoy the dark polar night! The team of friendly huskies will pull you through the sparkling winter wonderland.  Immerse yourself in the dark wintry nights of Lapland and escape the city lights with the enthusiast huskies. Along the route a stop will be made to enjoy a warm outdoor dinner and a hot drink by the campfire. Meanwhile, the guide will provide you with more information about the Northern Lights. An experience which will give you memories for a lifetime!

 
Day 3 – Abisko and Aurora Sky Station

Today you will continue northward to the small mountain village of Abisko. Situated within a bowl of mountains, Abisko is well known as the “Blue Hole” (a patch of permanently clear sky) because of its little cloudy and snowy weather. In addition to its location on the Auroral Oval, Abisko becomes the best place in Europe for observing the magical natural phenomenon Northern Lights. A transfer will take you to the Kiruna train station, followed by a 1,5-hour scenic train ride towards Abisko. In the evening you will take the chairlift up to the Aurora Sky Station, 900 meters above sea level, which is listed in the Lonely Planet’s top 10 places of the world for Northern Lights viewing. After arriving, you have an opportunity to learn more about the Northern Lights by participating in a guided tour.  The last chairlift ride down leaves at 01:00.

Day 4 – Abisko National Park 

In the morning you may take it easy after having a late night in the Aurora Sky Station. If you plan to wake up early then there are many optional tours to choose from to explore the Abisko National Park in your preferred way. What about taking part in a scenic snowmobile tour driving high up in the mountain areas.  Ice fishing or snowshoe walking into the unspoiled winter wonderland? We can recommend visiting the Naturum visitor center for the Abisko National Park to learn more about the region.

After dinner, you may choose for a relaxed last evening in the hotel, or spend one more evening outdoors chasing the Northern Lights by joining an optional snowmobile Northern Lights safari.

Day 5 – Departure Day

After daily enjoying new experiences it’s time to travel home. Depending on your flight schedule, maybe you have some time left to relax in this Northernmost part of Swedish Lapland. If you have an early flight, then it is time to get ready and check out of your hotel room. A transfer will be arranged for you from Abisko to Kiruna Airport. You can look back on your amazing 5 days visit to Swedish Lapland!

Arrival Day

Arrival at Luleå airport according your flight schedule. You will be welcomed by our local guide, who will assist you with getting your rental car at the airport. When walking outside the airport you enter a winter wonder land, fresh air, minus temperatures and a snow covered landscape. On the short drive (10 km) to your accommodation near the the city centre, you already get a good impression from the frozen Luleå river. Check in by your comfortable bungalow at First Camp and when you are lucky, maybe in the evening the magical Northern lights appear at sky in the dark polar night!

Day 3 – Dog Sledding Tour

Today you will experience one of the best activities possible in Swedish Lapland. After a short drive you will arrive at the Husky farm, where you will hear, meet and greet the eager Huskies. These dogs are intelligent, good-natured and born to run! Nature doesn’t get much closer than dog sledding through snow covered forest and over frozen rivers. After the safety instructions, you can sit back and relax on the sled while the guide is standing behind you mushing the dogs. Warm winter overall will be provided before the start of the tour. Return at your accommodation around 13:00. For the midday no activities are planned.

Optional you can upgrade to drive your own sled. Here you will have your own sled and team of Huskies. You set of in pairs, where you have the possibility to rotate position during the tour.

Day 5 – Snowshoe walking

Today, after breakfast you will go together with an experienced guide on a snowshoe tour into the near by nature reserves of Luleå. Walking on snowshoes is an unique way to get close to nature. There are a variety of trails to suit all ages and abilities. No experience is required and we supply all the gear you need for a safe and comfortable trip. If you can walk you can snowshoe – it’s that easy! During the tour your guide will tell you about the unique local nature, and hot beverages will be served during the tour. Return at your accommodation around 13:00. For the midday are no activities planned.

Day 7 – Snowmobile Tour

After breakfast, you can look forward to the snowmobile adventure of a lifetime. This activity starts just from a 20 minutes drive from your accommodation. Winter overall, boots, gloves, and helmet will be provided and before the start your guide will give safety instructions. On this 2 hour tour, you will ride through snow covered forests and over the frozen sea in the archipelago. Along the way a stop is made for hot beverages, here the guide will tell you about the surroundings and about life in the Northern Wilderness. Experience the perfect mix of easy riding through the beautiful winter scenery of Swedish Lapland. Return at your accommodation around 13:00. For the midday no activities are planned.

– 4 hour snowmobile tours (available after 8 January)
Upgrade to a 4 hour snowmobile tour and discover the beauty and unique surrounding of the Luleå Archipelago. The destination of the tour is the outermost islands of the archipelago. This tour is including outdoor lunch which is cooked above open fire.

 

Day 2 – Free Day

Are you interested in skiing? The surrounding of Luleå offers many skiing centres. They are family orientated with good ground based activities and clubhouses with hot food and drinks available. If you don’t have your own equipment, there are opportunities to rent at the location. The slopes in this region will give you good fun skiing as an activity for several hours.

In Luleå you can also find very well maintained Cross Country Skiing tracks. Over the years this type of skiing has moved from being a means of transportation, to pure, social fun. Day 4 – Free Day

Time to relax and spend some free time today on your Swedish Lapland Winter holiday. You can bring a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Gammelstad the best preserved church town from Sweden. Walk through the labyrinth of narrow streets in between the more than 400 old charming and red coloured cottages. Most of the church town is still in the same style as a few hundred years ago. Gammelstad is located on a short distance from Luleå and easy to reach with own transport. Are you curious to know what more activities are possible? Check out all activities on our website.

All resorts have winter lighting so you can continue skiing in the evening.

Day 6 – Free Day

A free day to explore Swedish Lapland. If you want to learn more about the Sámi culture, then we recommend to make a day trip to Jokkmokk (170km). Jokkmokk is a natural meeting place for Sámi people and a centre for Sámi culture for more than 400 years. Here you can bring a visit to one of the local craft shops with unique handicrafts of silver, forging, tin and all kind of reindeer products. Or learn more about the Sami culture in the Ájtte Museum. Just before you arrive at Jokkmokk you pass the Arctic Circle. This marks the southern limit of the area which, for one day or more each year, the Sun does not set (about June 21) or rise (about December 21). The length of continuous day or night increases northward from one day on the Arctic Circle to six months at the North Pole.

Sámi culture

During your Swedish Lapland winter holiday, we can also include the unique possibility to meet a Sámi family in their winter camp just outside Jokkmokk, Here you can spend a couple of relaxing hours for all your senses, listen to the sparkling fire while you enjoy traditional Sami food and hot steaming coffee. Take part of the joik, the traditional Sami way to musically tell a story and to remember the old ways.

 

Day 8 – Departure Day

After the breakfast, it’s time to check out and start driving to Luleå Airport. Return your rental car at the airport prior to your return flight.
